At the practice of Dr. Paul Covell, patients in and around the area of Pasadena, TX have access to tooth replacement solutions. While many of our patients tend to focus on using dental implants as a permanent option, not everyone is a candidate. Instead, our team may make a recommendation of a partial denture.
What is a partial denture?
Partial dentures are prosthetic replacements for missing teeth that can be easily removed. These typically have a metal framework that uses the surrounding teeth as support to hold the appliance in place. Sometimes, pink plastic or acrylic may be used to replicate the gum tissue, while a fake tooth called a pontic is used for replacing one or more teeth within the dental arch. These restorations are easily removed for the mouth, and most patients remove them at night before cleaning and putting back into their mouth the next morning.
When are partial dentures a viable option for tooth replacement?
Most of our patients who choose partial dentures are seeking a restoration that is both economical and natural-looking. Partial dentures are custom-made for the patient, ensuring they have a smile that is beautiful and fully-functional. Partial dentures allow patients to restore their eating and speaking abilities, which may become difficult depending on how many teeth have been lost. For individuals who have lost all their teeth, a partial denture will not be a viable option as it requires existing teeth for support. Instead, these patients may be better suited for a full cosmetic denture which is also available at Unicare Center for Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry.
How do partial dentures stay in place?
Part of the metal framework of a partial denture is used to hold the appliance in place. There may be metal or plastic clasps that tighten and attach to the existing natural teeth for stability and strength. Partial dentures can be easily removed as well for cleaning.
